The series consists of four individual events:

  • Paul Vondiziano, world-class guitarist will be the featured performer at the opening concert on February 8 at 3:00 p.m. No tickets are required but a donation will be received.
  • Land of Sky Symphonic Band will perform on April 19 at 3:00 p.m. The band will be playing concert band music in the tradition of a community style band. Again, no tickets are required but a donation will be received.
  • Dr. Walter Bruggemann will present a series of lectures June 6-7 (10:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m on Saturday, June 6 and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7) Tickets are $10 for each lecture. Dr. Bruggemann will be preaching at the 11:00 Worship Service on June 7 and there is no charge.
  • Dr. Marcus Borg will then present a series of lectures September 18-20. (September 18 - TBA; September 19 - 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; September 20 - Adult Forum at 9:45.0 Tickets are $10 for each lecture. There is no charge for the Adult Forum on September 20.

Sponsorships are available which include a reduced cost for admission to the lectures and reserved seating for some of the events.

He will speak on the theme of “The Craft of Discipleship.” His presentation will address faithfulness as a range of practices and skills we learn as Christians. “The effort here is to work against the tendency in our culture to think about faith too much as a subjective experience. These lectures will focus on practices, their formative role in our lives, and their importance for being the church.”

The lectures will be offered between 9 a.m and 3 p.m Two sessions will be offered prior to lunch and one afterwards. The registration fee is $25 per person (which includes lunch).

Included churches are located in the geographical area of the former Southern Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church — now the area of Western North Carolina

The book includes a brief history of 120 churches, five institutions and three special ministries. It also includes a history of the Southern Conference and the Western North Carolina Association of the United Church of Christ.

Books are to be ready for distribution by mid-October. They are being offered to members of the United Church of Christ for the special price of $25/copy until January 1, 2009. The market price of the book is $39.50.
